We've all seen packs that absorb moisture. But can we tell someone else how to use them? We usually get them as part of the packaging for something we bought, and we throw them away. Still, these small packets can be a very helpful addition to your toolbox.
A desiccant is a
substance that dries things out. The main purpose of desiccant packs is to
remove excess moisture from the packaging of products that are sensitive to
moisture. Most of the time, consumers are used to seeing these small,
self-contained packages made from the packaging of electronic products.
Rice is a
"low-tech" alternative many of us have probably used. Remember how
there were a few grains of rice in the salt shaker? The goal was for the rice
to absorb some of the extra water from the salt.

Can these little
sachets be used for anything else besides shipping and packaging? Should the
person who buys them put them in a drawer or toolbox? Let's take a look at some
choices.
Desiccant packs, also
known as silica gel packs, can be used to:
Take the extra water
out of wet cell phones and other electronics. Remove the battery as soon as you
can from any electronic device to avoid as much damage as possible. Shake, dry
with a towel, or use any other method to get rid of as much water as you can
see. But don't use anything hot, like a hair dryer, because it could hurt the
electronics even more. Overnight, put the device in a bowl of silica gel
packets to get rid of any moisture that might still be there.
Put silica gel packets
inside the camera's case along with the camera to keep water and fog from
condensation from getting into the camera's waterproof housing.
When added to zipper
storage bags with electronics or battery chargers, these desiccant packs will
give you extra protection.
Keep guns and
ammunition away from water in places with a lot of humidity. Put some desiccant
packs in your gun safe to stop rust. Don't forget to switch out the packs often
so they can keep working well. Most of the time, these packets will be bigger
than the ones most consumer electronics come in. Check with a gun shop in your
area.
Other than silica gel
packs, there are other types of desiccant packs. Even though these are the
ones, we know best, other drying agents work just as well or better. For
example, Kraft sells a pack made of aluminum silicate clay, which the company
says is cheaper than silica gel. This product is used in many different
industries, such as, pharmaceuticals and electronics, to control the amount of
moisture in closed environments.
When you need to get
rid of too much moisture, don't forget to consider using container
desiccant.
